College to Host Adult Education Research Conference May 31-June 3; Boyer Lecture Set for June 1

Dr. Juanita Johnson-BaileySUNY Empire State College will host the Adult Education Research Conference (AERC) May 31-June 3.

Thursday, May 31, comprises four preconferences: African Diaspora; Graduate; Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Allies; and Adult Literacy Education. On Thursday evening, the conference will officially begin with an opening plenary and reception.

The college’s Boyer lecture will be delivered Friday, June 1, by Dr. Juanita Johnson-Bailey, at right, who holds the Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professorship, is the director of the Institute for Women’s Studies and a professor of adult education in the Department of Lifelong Education, Administration and Policy at the University of Georgia. This event will be open to the college community via webcast.

The conference will continue through Sunday and conclude with a closing plenary on Sunday. Program and registration information are at

The college's AERC planning committee consists of Dr. Julie Gedro, who is also coordinating the Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Allies preconference; Dr. Joyce McNight, who secured the opportunity to host the prestigious conference; Dr. Dianne Ramdeholl, who is also coordinating the adult literacy pre-conference; Jill Buban, who is also coordinating the graduate student preconference; and Susan McFadden, coordinator of special events.

About the Boyer Lecture
The Boyer Lecture Series was established in 2004 by Kathryn Boyer in memory and honor of her late husband. Ernest L. Boyer was chancellor of the SUNY System from 1970 to 1977 and was instrumental in the founding of Empire State College in 1971.

The lecture series also honors the former SUNY chancellor's son, Stephen Paul Boyer, ’86, an adjunct mentor at the Center for Distance Learning; grandson Gabriel Boyer, ’04; and Kathryn, who graduated in 1978.
