Featuring Your Site in the Commons

As readily shown by The Student Connection, at Empire State College, we believe one of the best ways to help students grow is to give them an outlet to express themselves. Many students already use the Commons as a tool to help with their coursework -- but did you know you can use the platform as an experimental tool to communicate your personal and professional interests, too? Your Commons sites don’t have to be tied to your coursework – they can be used as your outlet to explore other topics and engage your fellow Empire State College students to ensure development beyond our college walls. Not only that, but we want to feature your sites.

The “Faculty & Staff Sites” tab provides a list of sites available to the college community that are created and managed by Empire State College employees. In an effort to create a much more extensive web of collaboration and expression via the Commons system, we would like students to have the same opportunity to publicize their own sites.

If you have an existing Commons site that is completely public to the Empire State College community or the world, we would like to help you market it by adding it to our newly created “Student Sites” tab on the Commons homepage, and possibly to our slideshow of “Featured Sites,” also on the homepage.

To have your site listed, visit the Commons Support Site and make sure your site meets the Use of the Commons and Individual Web Spaces Policy (use the “Site Assessment Checklist” on the Commons Support homepage as a guide). Then, email us at Commons.Request@esc.edu with your name, your site’s URL, your site’s title, the general theme of your site (i.e., professional portfolio, online journal, etc.), and whether you are interested in being featured on the homepage. You’ll hear back from us within 48 hours.

If you don’t have a Commons site, create one, or two -- or as many as you want. The Commons Support Site provides plenty of self-help videos, documentation and more info, as well as a “Feedback” button on the left side that allows you to leave questions, post comments or make suggestions on how we can improve your experience.

We look forward to hearing from you and seeing how you use this flexible system to expand your Empire State College experience.
