The Voices Poetry Club held a Poetry Showcase on May 1 at the Brooklyn Unit on Livingston Street. Club President Edwin Deloatch hosted the event, which premiered many students and guest poets presenting their original “spoken word” poetry. The performers dressed to complement their form and style of poetry. Nearly 200 guests attended the event.
The showcase spotlighted three special guests: HrshReyalitee, Gabriel Ramierez and Aiesha Turman, who presented their real-world, real-life poetry. Also featured was club faculty advisor Mentor Lynette Nickleberry, who performed “Grandmother.”
The elegant event was catered by Two Fish and Five Loaves of Union, N.J. Student Jab Lib delighted the audience with reggae music -- “Empress Omega” -- evoking humming among the crowd. April Simmons, student services specialist, also presented her poem, “Bed of Roses,” complete with mood lighting and a bed of roses video as her backdrop.
