Seeking Nominations and Applications for this Year’s Student Service Award
By Danielle Boardman, coordinator of student life, Academic Affairs
March 5, 2015
The Service Award was created to recognize and honor the students that selflessly commit their time to improving their community and college as well as the well-being of other people. Patricia Myers, director of collegewide student services, states, “Empire State College students are often the backbone of their communities. The Service Award will recognize those students who have participated in worthy causes in addition to managing their busy lives as students, employees and family members. Creating a sustainable world requires us to take care of one another; I know many of our students exemplify that belief."
Last year, we honored six amazing women who each embodied passion, commitment to service and dedication to their local communities. Last year’s awardees were; Layla Abdullah-Poulos from the School for Graduate Studies, Lori Mould from our Genesee Valley location, Brenda Muhammad from the School for Graduate Studies, Jawana Richardson from our Long Island location, Tanya Thompson from our Metropolitan location and Badiah Wilson from our Center for Distance Learning.
The Service Award will be presented this year at the Student Wellness Retreat taking place, April 17 - 18 in Albany, New York. Students can be nominated by someone within the service group, a fellow student, an alumnus or alumna, college staff or mentor, or one can apply without a nomination.
The individual must submit an application and two letters of recommendation by March 16 in order to be considered for the award. Students who are selected to receive the award also will receive a travel grant to assist them so they can attend the Student Wellness Retreat.
