Have you been told that your writing is powerful, well-crafted, moving? Do you dream of seeing your work published, of working with a professional editor to reach more than 10,000 readers with your journalistic talents and ideas? Becoming an on-staff writer for The Student Connection could help you realize your dreams and beef up your resume.
SUNY Empire State College’s student-run newsletter, The Student Connection, is seeking candidates to fill 2-3 on-staff student writer positions. On-staff student writers will be expected to write at least two journalistic articles or one profile article per month and will be asked to attend and report on local-to-them college events for The Student Connection. These events would be free of charge and not mandatory if they do not fit in with the writer's schedule. Additionally, on-staff student writers will be expected to attend regular staff meetings during which article ideas will be discussed for upcoming issues of the newsletter.
The Student Connection provides students a chance to see their journalistic efforts published. This opportunity is designed to encourage writers to craft non-fiction articles and news reports (excluding creative pieces intended for the creative section) in AP style. Applicants must be current matriculated SUNY Empire State College students in good standing. Interested students should review the article submission guidelines and email Student.Editor@esc.edu to receive an application.
In addition to a completed application, students must provide the following:
- current resume
- two (2) written references (may be emailed directly to firstname.lastname@example.org)
- two (2) samples of your work in digital format (i.e., .doc, .docx or .rtf)
Applications will be reviewed as they are received, and applicants may be asked to submit an original writing sample to be published in an upcoming issue as part of the interview process. Due to the required amount of writing per month, payment for on-staff writers is $25 per journalistic article and $50 per profile.
Note: Writers will be appointed as funding permits.
