Welcome from the Editor and to the Student Connection!

I am very excited to start the new year and a new adventure as the editor for SUNY Empire State College’s student newsletter, The Student Connection. I am a full-time student studying Business Management and Economics and plan to earn my Bachelor of Science in 2017. In addition to my business studies, writing is something I love to do, which made choosing this writing-intensive college a very easy decision and that thus far has helped my experience as a student be very successful.
I stepped into the role of an adult student with many fears and trepidations. Since my first term in the fall of 2014, I have started the student club Lean In ESC, assist in the Office of Academic Support in Latham, N.Y. in the Peer Coaching Program, stepped into the role of editor for The Student Connection and, most recently, have taken on the role of Northeast Student Representative for the Student Affairs Committee. This proves there is much more than taking classes online at SUNY Empire State College.
In addition to my role as editor, I have the pleasure of working with an assistant editor and fellow student, Eric Norcross. Eric brings a great deal of creativity to the newsletter and I am excited to partner with him and take this news source to another level. The editorial board (Patricia Myers, Danielle Boardman and Helen Edelman) that supports the newsletter is an amazing group of people, all with a vested interest in the college and, more importantly, the students.
I am also very passionate about student engagement and supporting what can be an incredible college experience. The opportunities for students to showcase their skills and expertise here at SUNY Empire are endless -- and not only through course work and achieving good grades. One way is through The Student Connection. The newsletter is a strong platform for students, where they can contribute their collegiate work by way of news articles, social articles and various forms of creative art pieces. We want to share your hard work! We want to know about your experience as a student, we want to read your poems and opinion pieces and we want to read newsworthy features that capture the attention of students, faculty and alumni across the globe and in a journalistic environment.
Although we don’t limit the newsletter to students’ submissions and we do provide additional sources of information that are directed to students, as well as faculty and staff, we greatly encourage students to share their work and use this collegewide audience as a step towards achieving personal, professional and educational goals.
We are all very excited to start off the year and upcoming term with a fresh approach to growing The Student Connection.
We are always looking for on-staff writers and contributors and always encourage ideas and suggestions. If you are interested in writing for The Student Connection, contact us at Student.Editor@esc.edu.
