New Student Organization at SUNY Empire State College During an undergraduate education, knowledge is consumed. In graduate school knowledge is produced. While this is an exciting and promising endeavor, transitioning from one level of study to another can be challenging and the needs of students differ. Fortunately, the newly established SUNY Empire State College Graduate Student Collaborative (GSC) is a response to these needs.

‌The GSC was initiated in the fall of 2014 by students with an interest in offering support to individuals enrolled in SUNY Empire State College graduate programs. The purpose of the GSC is to encourage the convergence of graduate students from across SUNY Empire State College and varied disciplines, so they may engage and support each other in their academic, social and professional developments.

The mission is to promote and sustain a variety of educational and cultural experiences that will inspire graduate students to broaden their knowledge, generate communal interaction and develop a collective of scholarship amongst our diverse student body. The hope is to bring positive energy to a diverse population of students who are willing to share their various and experiences, while creating an atmosphere of cohesion and providing a platform to exchange ideas, network, collaborate on research, and share knowledge. There will be opportunities for social interaction and academic dialogue among our members, and help bridging the gap among graduate students who sometimes feel isolated from peers while pursuing their collegiate goals in a nontraditional environment.

Goals include to enhance the ESC graduate student experience with prospects for collaborative research, collegewide events and activities, student attendance at graduate conferences and increased support to the college’s effort for diversity and inclusion. Some of the ways this will be achieved is by hosting mixers at the residencies where students meet, network and share critical issues/questions with faculty and staff. Additionally, there will be opportunities to engage online students via webinars, so they too can have a way to voice their issues and concerns and ask questions about capstone projects, etc. The GSC is a SUNY Empire State College student organization that will demonstrate and foster the inclusive academic culture and promote diverse disciplines and perspectives. New members are welcomed and encouraged.

To join, email: GSC@esc.edu or contact Carolyn Massey, president, at Carolyn_Massey186@esc.edu or Rhianna Rogers, faculty advisor at Rhianna.Rogers@esc.edu
