Seeking Nominations and Applications for this Year’s Student Service Award
By Danielle Boardman, coordinator of student life, SUNY Empire State College
March 10, 2016
The Student Service Award was created to recognize and honor students, according to Patricia Myers, director of Collegewide Student Affairs. She says, “Empire State College students are often the backbone of their communities. The Student Service Award was created to recognize and honor the students who selflessly commit their time to improving the community and college, as well as the well-being of other people. The service award also recognizes those students who have participated in worthy causes, as well as managed their busy lives as students, employees and family members.”
Last year, we honored 11 amazing people, each of whom embodied passion, commitment to service and dedication to their local communities. Last year’s awardees were Aleshia Akers, from our Central New York location; Sandra Barkevich and Gina Bartolomeo, from our School for Graduate Studies; Maureen Lundberg, from our Northeast location; Lauren Masset, from our Niagara Frontier location; Jawana Richardson, Robin Rizzo and Melinda Wills-Stallings, from our Long Island location; Debbrah Schneider and Zofia Vasile, from our Genesee Valley location; and Lorraine Pippins, from our Metropolitan location.
The service award will be presented this year at the Student Health and Wellness Retreat, April 14-16 in Albany, N.Y. Students can be nominated by someone within the service group, a fellow student, an alumnus or alumna, college staff, or mentor, or can be a self-nomination application.
To be considered for the award, individuals must submit an application and two letters of recommendation by March 18. Students who are selected will receive a travel grant to assist them to attend the retreat in Albany.
