Albany Mayor Sheehan swore in Warren W. Abriel Jr., a 42-year fire department veteran, as the new chief of the Department of Fire and Emergency Service at a ceremony at City Hall on Feb. 25. Abriel is a 1983 graduate of Empire State College.
A lifelong Albany resident, Abriel has served on the Albany Fire Department since 1972. Working his way up through the ranks, he was appointed to the post of executive deputy chief, the AFD's second highest post, in 2008. He has served in upper-management positions for more than 26 years with the department. Abriel holds a Master of Science in Public Administration from Russell Sage College, a Bachelor of Professional Studies in Business, Management and Economics with a concentration in fire service administration from Empire State College, an Associate of Applied Science in Fire Protection Technology and a Certificate of Fire Science from Schenectady County Community College. He is a certified hazardous materials technician, fire officer level II and New York state instructor, teaching various courses at Empire State College since 1987.
Sheehan commended Abriel's outstanding experience in fire and emergency services in her nomination. "I'm honored to promote Warren Abriel to fire chief. Warren has dedicated over 40 years to protecting our city's residents, a record of service that is truly inspiring. His commitment to the department and his extensive background in public administration and management makes him the best person to lead the AFD into the future," said Sheehan.
"I am deeply honored that Mayor Sheehan has expressed her trust and confidence in promoting me to the position of chief of the Albany Fire Department," Abriel said. "I look forward to serving the mayor and the citizens of the city of Albany with dedication and professionalism as chief. The Albany Fire Department is comprised of the finest men and women, whom I consider it a privilege to work with each day."
