Certification Areas and Content Requirements
Empire State College offers certification in the content areas listed below. To meet state education department requirements, applicants must possess a bachelor's degree and 30 credits in the content area of which 12 credits can be in cognates (related courses). In addition, at least six credits of advanced level coursework is required in each content area (300 level or higher). All applicants must meet general education requirements. (Undergraduate courses with a grade below C are not acceptable. Graduate courses with a grade below B will not count toward content).
Middle Childhood Education (Grades 5-9) and Adolescent Education (Grades 7-12) Content Requirements
- Earth Science
- Language other than English (French)
- Language other than English (Spanish)
- Social Studies

General Education Requirements for New York State Certification
Applicants in all content areas must have completed 30 semester hours of liberal arts and sciences general education.
