Graduate Certificate in Optometry Business Management

In order to strengthen SUNY College of Optometry graduates’ potential to be leaders in their field, SUNY College of Optometry and Empire State University jointly offer the Advanced Graduate Certificate in Optometry Business Management. The certificate provides knowledge and critical tools to identify, anticipate, analyze and address important economic, policy and organizational challenges that optometry students will confront as they transition into professional roles and progress in their careers.

Note: This program is only open to SUNY College of Optometry students.

Program Design

The six-course curriculum focuses on health policy, financial management, practice management, operations management, leadership, interprofessional relations and public health.

Each course is three credits. The 18 credits are fully applicable to the MBA in Healthcare Leadership at SUNY Empire.

Two courses are provided by SUNY College of Optometry and four by SUNY Empire. The SUNY College of Optometry courses are provided in an onsite classroom. For students’ convenience, SUNY Empire courses are offered online.

College of Optometry Courses

  • Optometric Practice in a Changing Health Care Environment (3 Credits)
  • Public Health (3 Credits)

Empire State University Courses

  • MGMT 6040 High Performance Management (3 Credits)
  • HCLM 6030 Quantitative Methods and Healthcare Operations Management (3 Credits)
  • HCLM 6025 Healthcare Financial Management (3 Credits)
  • HCLM 7005 Strategic Corporate Communication and Inter-professional Collaboration (3 Credits)

Admission and Advisement

Advising will be provided by the certificate program coordinator, Dr. Barry Eisenberg.

While the 18 credits are fully transferable into the MBA program, acceptance to the MBA in Healthcare Leadership will require candidates to apply to the master’s degree program and complete the full admission process. Completion of the graduate certificate does not guarantee admission to the master’s degree program.

Advanced certificates may be incorporated into a related master's degree for those meeting the program admission requirements.
