SUNY Empire State College School for Graduate Studies Professors Pat Isaac and Donna Mahar recently presented “Trauma and Literacy” at Van Duyn Elementary School in Syracuse. The presentation’s purpose was to improve academic achievement of Van Duyn’s students by supporting their teachers.

Van Duyn Elementary Principal Eva Williams thanked Mahar and Isaac for coming to Van Duyn to give their presentation. “The teachers were empowered to use literacy as a salve for students with high emotional needs,” said Williams.

SUNY Empire Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs David Bejou also praised Isaac and Mahar.

“Engagement with and strengthening of communities has always been an important part of SUNY Empire State College and its mission,” said Bejou. “I am proud of the work that Donna and Pat are doing.”
