Eskişehir, Turkey Program
Our partner institution in Turkey is Anadolu University (AU). This partnership is one of many that State University of New York campuses have with public and private universities in Turkey. Anadolu is a public institution which consists of a campus-based program, serving approximately 22,000 students, and a distance learning program, having well over one million students. In fact, Anadolu is one of the five largest universities in the world.
The ESC-AU program serves students who attend the campus-based program. Students complete approximately three years of study toward their bachelor’s degree with AU and one year of full-time study with SUNY Empire. Studies with SUNY Empire begin the second semester of the Freshman year. The credit earned at both institutions is mutually recognized, and each issues its own diploma for the degree. The Anadolu courses are classroom-based, while the SUNY Empire courses combine face-to-face residencies with online learning. SUNY Empire instructors meet with students at the AU campus twice a term, at the beginning and the end of each term. In between the residencies, students work with their instructors through online learning. We call this the blended model, which has become very popular among American colleges and universities.
The residencies are offered during the evenings and one-day on the weekend. The semester parallels the AU semester of 15 weeks, including the examination period. The semesters run from September to January, February to May, and July to August. We offer a summer program in New York state, which will depend on having minimally ten student participants.
In addition to our own courses, we offer six courses as co-taught with our partner universities for a total of six SUNY Empire credits, which is part of our 34 credit residency requirement. The dual diploma program will start once we have ten students who have completed the Hazilik (intensive English preparation school) and successfully passed the TOEFL or its equivalent.
Anadolu University has its main campus in Eskişehir, a city located in a highly populated industrial region that includes high-tech manufacturing. The city is beautiful with stunning parks and its famous river walk which rivals San Antonio’s.
A bullet train connects Eskişehir to Ankara. Soon there will be a connection to Istanbul, one of the great cities of the world and approximately 200 miles to the north. There is also an excellent bus service.
The Anadolu campus is large and nicely landscaped. The university has high-tech classrooms, an excellent library, hotel facilities for visitors and its own airport with connections to Istanbul, a thirty-minute flight.
