An Exhibit of Still Lifes and Landscapes

Gretel Hemingway Duffy Exhibit: "Art Evolves"

A collection of works by artist Gretel Hemingway Duffy will be featured in an exhibit opening on Thursday, May 9th at Empire State College. The exhibit, titled "Art Evolves," opens at the Central New York Center in Syracuse and will include an hors d'oeuvres reception from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. This free public event, will take place at the Central Arts Center Gallery, 6333 Route 298, East Syracuse.

From the Finger Lakes Region in upstate New York, Duffy is a graduate of SUNY, Empire State College and has found a way to express herself through her art. Graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in commercial art, her talents are exemplified through her paintings of still lifes and landscapes. A painting study offered by the university, has given her the abilities to broaden her horizons to include oil.

She has worked with different mediums and enjoys painting subjects and scenes she has a connection with. Duffy has found working with an oil medium to be unlike any other stating, "I enjoy the versatility of working with an oil medium; slow drying time offers so much flexibility within a piece of work." She currently works for a company, managing their websites, painting their store front windows, and creating marketing designs. Her work has been published in the Merchandiser, a local advertising magazine, covering three counties.

As a proud wife and mother in the midst of raising four boys, she focuses on balancing her time between parenting, home, and work. She paints from her 2nd story home studio, overlooking her family farm, taking full advantage of painting the field and sky views from her window. She often photographs scenes and images around her property and elsewhere, when the natural light is accurate, in order to capture a moment that will soon pass. She later paints these images on canvas. Her still lifes are often of family heirlooms which she finds interesting to paint for personal reasons. Her use of light and color enhances her work through the values she chooses.

Gallery hours are Mondays and Fridays, 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 6 p.m.
