Printed, Woven, Dyed

Mentor Alan Stankiewicz has created a new show for the Central Arts Gallery at the Central New York Center in Each Syracuse. The show features textiles and textile surface designs dating back hundreds of years.

The exhibition, "Printed, Woven, and Dyed," offers a small glimpse into the history and aesthetics of textile surface design. Driven by innovation in technologies and by the discovery of synthetic materials, textile design reflects cultural aesthetics through current trends and historical references.

For years the main source of inspiration for textile surface design came from original art work created for the textile industry. In the past forty years a new and emerging source of inspiration can be found in antique and vintage textiles known as documentary textiles. Designers in the home furnishing and apparel industries currently use both when designing their products.

Most recently the computer has become a valuable tool in the design process. As an efficient way of expanding on ideas, the computer allows designers to increase their productivity while addressing opportunities in emerging markets.

Regardless of the inspiration or motivation, fabric offers a softened landscape filled with color and pattern. In the process textiles can evoke memories and re-invent space, allowing us to design our own sense of identity.

Visit the gallery's homepage for hours of operation and directions.

The show will run through January 2015.
