(SARATOGS SPRINGS, NY – October 3, 2023) Empire State University Assistant Professor of Addiction Studies Cailyn Green was featured in a two-part interview for Hudson Mohawk Magazine produced by Marsha Lazarus of The Sanctuary for Independent Media for National Recovery Month. She covered misconceptions about what addiction looks like, and how she is helping prepare future counselors in her role at Empire State University.

“Our program is dedicated to teaching students how to be ‘counselors for the client’. That’s what we’re trying to instill in our future counselors,” she said.

Green also talks about her goals to provide Open Educational Resources (OER) to future counselors. OER are teaching, learning, and research materials intentionally created to be free of cost for students. She is currently working on writing an OER textbook about social justice in human services with Assistant Professors in the School of Human Services Bernadet DeJonge and Carrie Steinman.

“What we see is students choose to not take classes based on expensive textbooks. The goal is to make education more accessible and equitable for our students,” Green said. “I’m dedicating a lot of the wonderful time that Empire State University allows me – part of my job is to do research and create resources and give back to my field -- to create resources to make my counselors’ jobs a little bit easier.”
