Orange Book Cover

(SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – August 10, 2023) SUNY Distinguished Service Professor Alan Mandell and Associate Professor of Community and Human Services and former director of the Center for Mentoring, Learning, and Academic Innovation Shantih Clemans co-authored a chapter in “Transformative Civic Education in Democratic Societies,” edited by Tetyana Hoggan-Kloubert, Paul E. Mabrey III, and Chad Hoggan. Their chapter, "All Voices and Perspectives Welcome: Faculty and Professional Development as Civic Education" appears on pages 97-107.

Mandell and Clemans’s chapter explores the philosophy and programs that have been at the heart of Empire State University’s Center for Mentoring, Learning and Academic Innovation (CMLAI) from its start 30 years ago. They make the case that faculty development is part of an engaged and valuable democratic process.

Clemans said, "This chapter was especially meaningful to create together as it underscores the collaborative, ‘all welcome’ spirit of CMLAI and of our understanding of faculty development."

Mandell said, “Three elements in the title of this edited book stood out for us, the words ‘transformative,’ ‘civic education,’ and ‘democratic societies.’ How important to think about how a plan for faculty development can try to capture those three vital and interconnected areas.” Learn more about the book at
