The Bluebird Award recognizes students who have exemplified leadership and positively impacted their communities, selflessly and passionately. The award spotlights students who are making the world better with their time, resources, and abilities.

These Bluebird award winners make the world brighter for their service, especially for those in marginalized communities.

It was an honor to meet and speak with the winners this fall. Again, I congratulate them all and wish them continued success and prosperity. SGA stands in solidarity and support of all they do.

SGA’s TOP REASONS TO GET INVOLVED THIS SEMESTER

When you’re diving into a new semester, the thought of getting involved in extracurricular activities can be overwhelming. Although it may seem time-consuming, exploring interests outside of your classes can provide a break from schoolwork, alleviate stress, and make your college experience more enjoyable and balanced.

If you’re a new or returning student contemplating getting more involved this term, Student Government is just one of many activities at SUNY Empire that can help you adjust to life in and outside the classroom. Still on the fence? Here are our top reasons to get involved this spring:

MAKE CONNECTIONS

As college students learning online amid a pandemic, you may find it hard to meet people,  make friends, and network. While you may not have the chance to meet in person yet, there are still plenty of opportunities to engage with your classmates at the many events found on the online platform SUNY Empire Connects. Whether at gatherings like Virtual Painting with a Twist, Game Night, or monthly meetings like SGA’s All Hands Meeting, you have ample opportunities to meet new people who have similar interests.

DISCOVER NEW INTERESTS

Getting involved in different activities can help you identify new interests and strengths that you never knew you had. Consider going to an event or participating in school-wide organizations that spark your interest. The SUNY Empire Esports program is one example that’s open to all students and is a great activity for those looking for both casual and competitive online activities.

BUILD YOUR RESUME

Participating in extracurricular activities can prepare you for more significant leadership positions in your current or future line of work. Therefore, getting involved is a great way to boost your resume and show prospective employers, graduate schools, and others that you have time management skills, diverse interests, and talents outside the classroom. Participating on the SGA Student Senate Committees for example, is not only a great resume builder but an excellent opportunity to make a difference at SUNY Empire by lending your voice on topics like student engagement, academics, and diversity.

LEARN TIME MANAGEMENT

Joining a student organization may present you with various responsibilities, including attending meetings and events. The responsibilities combined with your coursework and other activities may keep you busy. Still, they will also provide you with much-needed breaks from schoolwork to alleviate stress and make your time at SUNY Empire more enjoyable and balanced. Take a break this semester and attend SGA Office Hours to meet with members of the SGA to learn about more ways you can get involved.
